Alter E(c)o, 2018

Alter E(c)o is a series of three large-scale sculptures that represent a fictional, dystopian landscape of the natural world after humans have become extinct. My sculptures resemble hypothetical, geological formations composed of residual matter left behind by mankind. My process of building and stacking foam layers from the bottom up is meant to resemble the natural process and formation of geological accretions. The use of polystyrene and other mass-produced materials is intended to be a bizarre depiction of telluric matter in millions of years to come as a result of our anthropogenic habits.

While the viewer is meant to be awed by each piece – much like they would be observing a real landscape – they are also meant to be aware of their artificiality. Their scale makes the viewer feel large, suggesting that our presence has a greater impact on our environment than we might realize. The synthetic, man-made composition of each form is meant to represent our command over our ecosystem, revealing that we truly are the creators of our own ecosystem.
